Pardon my ignorance, but is this how professional bodywork is done? It seems like that kind of manipulation would severely weaken the unibody, but obviously there wouldn’t really be any other way to repair that kind of damage.

Deformed metal bent back will never behave the same as an unmodified panel. How much strength   is lost, who knows.
